Task 2, ENG110
Original:
There are three main types of liberal arts education that Scheuer mentions in his article. The first, he writes, “embraces the ideal of the integrated curriculum, encompassing virtually all nonprofessional higher learning, from the natural and social sciences to the humanities and the performing arts” (para. 9). The second format excludes, “but does not denigrate” (para. 12) the sciences, and the third “focuses mainly on the humanities” (para. 12). CAS fits the first type the best because it is designed to include the essential liberal arts classes such as English, but also requires the student to take science and creative arts courses. In its Core Values Statement, the CAS handbook states, “Students should emerge from their undergraduate education with an ability to write effectively. Scientific literacy… is also central to our educational mission” (2.2.2). Although it is not directly mentioned in this section, creative arts are also a part of the core requirements. Personally, I think this is the best version of any higher education. When the sciences and creative arts are excluded, we lose those benefits such as a STEM education loses the benefits of the humanities. By integrating every subject in education, students develop a broad range of knowledge and valuable critical thinking skills.
Revised:
There are three main types of liberal arts education that Scheuer mentions in his article. The first, he writes, “embraces the ideal of the integrated curriculum, encompassing virtually all nonprofessional higher learning, from the natural and social sciences to the humanities and the performing arts” (para. 9). The second format excludes, “but does not denigrate” (para. 12) the sciences, and the third “focuses mainly on the humanities” (para. 12). CAS fits the first type the best because it is designed to include the essential liberal arts classes such as English, but also requires the student to take science and arts courses. In its Core Values Statement, the CAS handbook states,
“We value the role of the arts and languages in instilling fluency, creativity, and imagination in thought and expression. Students should emerge from their undergraduate education with an ability to write effectively. Scientific literacy, including an understanding of scientific along with quantitative and qualitative approaches to comprehending the universe, is also central to our educational mission.” (2.2.2).
I would also say that CAS goes above and beyond this generalized type of liberal arts. With the institution of environmental awareness and by broadening the performing arts to the creative arts, CAS further achieves the ideals of the liberal arts. Personally, I think this is the best version of any higher education. When the sciences and creative arts are excluded, we lose those benefits such as a STEM education loses the benefits of the humanities. By integrating every subject in education, students develop a broad range of knowledge and valuable critical thinking skills.
Explanation:
I revised this paragraph by, first, using a stronger quote. I found that the quote I had was weak in proving my point, so I used this one because it encompasses all the aspects of humanities, arts and sciences. Second, I rewrote the content after the quote to better flow out of the quote into the next paragraph.
